- Medicare covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, with set limits and under a qualified provider's supervision. Ask us what applies to you.
How fees work
Insurance and plans
We bill the VA for the visits it authorized, and we bill the insurer of a work injury claim where the claim covers acupuncture. With other health plans we are out of network, so you pay at the visit and we give you a receipt.
VA Community Care: with an authorization from the VA
Work injury claims: we check what your claim covers
Other plans: out of network, with a receipt to claim
Medicare and Medicaid: ask us what applies to you
If you pay yourself
Before you book, the front desk tells you the fee for your first visit and for each visit after it. The fee depends on how long the visit is and whether it is a first visit. HSA and FSA cards can often be used: ask your plan administrator.
A receipt to send to your plan
After every visit we give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, that your plan may reimburse in part. Your plan decides. Before you send it, ask your plan:
Is there an acupuncture benefit?
How many visits does it allow?
Is there a copay or a deductible?
Do I need a referral?
An estimate in advance
If you pay without insurance, we give you a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit. Ask for it when you book. If a bill comes in $400 or more above that estimate, you can dispute it.
Checking your benefits
With a VA authorization or a work injury claim, the front desk checks what it covers before your first visit and tells you. With other plans, call your plan first and ask the questions above; we help you read the answers.
What the first visit includes
A first visit takes about 75 minutes: a conversation, a treatment and a plan. Later visits take about 45. We share the fee with you in advance, as above.
